AfricaNow! features Sudanese diaspora who are speaking out and demonstrating against the conflict which has been taking place in Sudan since April 15. On June 3 a loose network of Sudanese diaspora organized a demonstration in front of the U.S. Capitol. Also on June 3, Pan-Africanist and Actionist Dr. Dimah Mahmoud began her sit-in in front of the Embassy of Sudan in Washington, DC. Today we feature a conversation with Dr. Dimah Mahmoud. Also in the program are voices of Reem Ali, a Harvard graduate and Emi Mahmoud, slam poet at a demonstration in front of the U.S. Capitol. The voices from the demonstration in front of the U.S. Capitol was graciously provided to us by Sudanese American journalist Isma’il Kushkush.

Summary–This December marks 5 years when the revolution began in Sudan. Following months of a popular uprising against the nearly 30-year reign of Omar al-Bashir, top officers in the military removed him from power on April 11, 2019. AfricaNow! features a discussion with Sudanese activist Enass Muzamel that highlights the hijacking by the military and other forces of the people's revolution, and the continuous struggle by citizen networks, resistance committees, civic society for a truly representative, democratic government and more. The show also focuses on the devastating impact on people of Sudan of the nearly eight-month-old war between the Sudan Armed Forces, and the paramilitary group the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Enass Muzamel is a prominent pro-democracy and peacebuilder activist and human rights defender from Sudan. She is pivotal as the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Madaniya, an organization dedicated to promoting civic engagement and advocating for human rights.

April 15 marks one year since war broke out in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo a.k.a. Hemedti. AfricaNow! presents conversations unpacking the war situation in Sudan and solidarity efforts with Sudanese in deal with the war’s impact. The conversations dissected internal and external players; the role multinational corporations; historic neoliberal policies which have undermined the country’s food production; the tremendous role of the Resistance Committees in addressing the needs of the people; the solidarity efforts with Sudanese from abroad and more. The conversations featured Dr. Nisrin Elamin and Diana Konate. Scholar/Activist Dr. Nisrin Elamin, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology and Department of African Studies, University of Toronto, and a member of the Sudan Solidarity Collective in Canada. Summary–Joining the show today to dissect the tragedy in Darfur and beyond is Mosaab Baba of Ayin Network–a media outlet in Sudan and member of the Pan-African Forum - Sudan. Mosaab Baba is a founding member of the Pan-African Forum - Sudan, and previously a member of the Girifna movement in Sudan. In recent years Mosaab has been a lead consultant for the Ayin Network, as well as working with the new civic actors after the 2019 revolution. Also on the show is a poem from Sudan entitled “ALIEN SUITE” BY SAFIA ELHILLO which was played at the Sankofa Video and Books program Sudan on My Mind two weeks ago. Summary–AfricaNow! as part of WPFW all-day special Amplify Sudan features a conversation exploring the historical role--past and current--of unions in Sudan in movements for positive change. Sudan’s labor unions have played an instrumental role in the struggle for independence from British colonial rule and in an independent Sudan the continued struggle for a government that truly represents the peoples’ wishes. Joining the show to cover these areas is writer, journalist and telecom professional Husam Mahjoub. Husam Mahjoub is Co-Founder of Sudan Bukra, an independent nonprofit TV channel. He has published articles on politics, human rights, the economy, and international and cultural affairs.
